The construction site begins
In 1782, Francis Calense Amos, a shipwright trained in London, established a shipyard in Gosport, near the royal shipyard. It initially focused on the construction and repair of small boats for local fishermen.
In 1809, he took on his grand-nephew, William Camper, as an apprentice. William took over the business in 1824 after Amos’s death. In 1842, Benjamin Nicholson joined the shipyard as an apprentice and, by 1855, was assuming a large part of the design work. This collaboration led to the firm’s renown as Camper & Nicholson, reflecting Nicholson’s significant contribution.
Key moments in the history of the construction site
- one thousand nine hundred ten A major fire destroyed the offices and part of the workshops at the Gosport shipyard. Reconstruction continued until 1912.
- one thousand nine hundred twelve : Acquisition of J.G. Fay & Co., a shipyard in Northam, Southampton, enabling the construction of larger yachts.
- one thousand nine hundred fourteen : Launch of the “Shamrock IV”, a racing yacht designed for the America’s Cup.
- one thousand nine hundred thirty-six : Construction of the “Endeavour II”, a J-class sailboat designed by Charles Nicholson for Sir Thomas Sopwith, intended for the America’s Cup.
- 1950-1970 : A period of innovation with the design of iconic yachts such as the Nicholson 32, one of the first mass-produced fiberglass sailboats.
