Founded in 1926 by Baptiste Aubin in Nantes, the Aubin shipyard left its mark on the history of French yachting by specializing in the construction of wooden and plywood sailboats. Known for its collaborations with naval architect Philippe Harlé, the shipyard produced iconic models such as the Muscadet, the Cognac, and the Armagnac. Despite its initial success, the shipyard ceased operations in the face of increased competition from large industrial manufacturers.
The Aubin shipyard was born
In 1926, Baptiste Aubin established his shipyard on the banks of the Erdre River in Nantes, near the Tortière Bridge. Specializing in the construction of classic boats, the shipyard distinguished itself by the quality of its craftsmanship. In 1962, under the direction of Baptiste’s sons, Paul and André Aubin, the construction site is moving to the banks of the Loire, to the place called “Norkiouse” in Trentemoult, Rezé district, to meet growing demand and diversify its production.
Key moments in the history of the construction site
- one thousand nine hundred sixty-three : Launch of the Muscadet, a hard-chine dinghy designed by Philippe Harlé. Built in approximately 600 units, this sailboat has met with considerable success among recreational sailors for its robustness and seaworthiness.
- 1970s The shipyard is diversifying its production by adopting polyester construction, thus adapting to technological developments and new market demands.
- one thousand nine hundred eighty-six : After six decades of activity, the Aubin shipyard gradually ceased operations, unable to compete with major industrial builders such as Bénéteau and Jeanneau.
The construction site today
Although the Aubin shipyard is no longer in operation, its legacy lives on through the many sailboats still sailing, testifying to the quality and durability of its construction. Models such as the Muscadet are particularly prized by enthusiasts and are the subject of meticulous restorations. In homage to this significant contribution to Nantes’ yachting scene, the quay located along the former shipyard site was named “Quai des Chantiers-Aubin” in 2013.
