SAO Textile, a startup based in Hérault, has set itself the mission of transforming used fishing nets into recycled yarn for the textile industry. Founded by Marine Olacia, this purpose-driven company is part of a circular economy approach and aims to protect the oceans. In 2025, SAO Textile plans to raise funds to accelerate its development and industrialize its production.
SAO Textile: A Local Initiative with a Global Impact
SAO Textile was founded in February 2023 by Marine Olacia, a fashion designer committed to environmental protection. The company, based in Bessan, Hérault, transforms used fishing nets into 100% recycled polyamide yarn, contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution in the oceans.
Recycling Process
The transformation process of fishing nets into recycled yarn is carried out entirely in France. The nets are collected from fishermen in Occitanie, then processed into polyamide pellets. These pellets are then melted and extruded to obtain continuous filaments, which are later turned into textile fibers.
Environmental Impact
Fishing nets account for 10% of underwater plastic pollution and can take up to 600 years to decompose. By recycling these nets, SAO Textile contributes to cleaning up the seas and preserving marine ecosystems.
Fundraising and Development
In 2025, SAO Textile plans to raise funds to industrialize its recycled yarn production. The funds will also be used to hire a team member for waste collection and to develop the company’s own textile collection.
SAO Textile is supported by several innovation stakeholders in Occitanie, including the economic development agency Blue, the Syndicat Mixte du Bassin de Thau, French Tech Méditerranée, and BPI France. The company is also a member of “1% for the Planet” and donates 1% of its profits to NGOs.
Exhibition and Awareness
On March 6, 2025, SAO Textile and Lycée Paul Poiret will present an exhibition titled “From the Mediterranean to Fashion: Marine Upcycling & Ecological Awareness” at the National Maritime Museum in Paris. This exhibition will showcase upcycled creations made from used fishing nets, raising public awareness of plastic pollution in the ocean and sustainable fashion.
Marine Olacia, founder of SAO Textile, is also involved with the NGO Project Rescue Ocean. She was recognized in 2024 by “101 Femmes de Matignon” and in 2022 by “Climate Launchpad France” for her commitment to environmental causes.
