How do you check your standing rigging?

You must regularly check your standing rigging. Monitoring the first signs of wear on your shrouds is as crucial for your mast as it is for safety at sea. Here are some best practices to sail peacefully, whatever the weather.

The rigging of your sailboat must be monitored and checked regularly. This check is done during the sailing season, both at sea and in port. However, this inspection of your shrouds and mast should also be carried out during the boat’s winterization, especially if you unstep the mast, or before relaunching. And, of course, if you sail on a trailerable sailboat and take it out after each sail, you will have the opportunity to do this very regularly.

Clearly, along with the engine, the boat’s rigging is undoubtedly the most frequently discussed topic on the docks. And some questions come up repeatedly:

  • Should I adjust it this way or that way?
  • If I sail only with the genoa, won’t that risk wearing out the backstay or forestay?
  • Is my forestay tight enough?
  • And most importantly: How long can my standing rigging last?

What is the Lifespan of Shrouds?

Let’s address the main question: the lifespan of standing rigging. In reality, it is quite difficult to define the exact lifespan of a sailboat’s rigging. Experts and professionals generally agree that a decade seems like a reasonable timeframe before replacing shrouds, lower shrouds, forestays, and backstays. However, at the same time, some boat owners have kept their standing rigging much longer. For example, I have met very experienced sailors who have been using the same rigging for over 20 years.

When to Replace Your Rigging?

Is this reasonable or reckless? I honestly don’t know. In reality, it will depend on how you use your boat, the type of rigging, and how well it is adjusted. But in any case, your insurer, to cover the risk of dismasting, will generally require you to replace your rigging every 10 years. And for me, this factor is decisive.

To conclude this reflection on the lifespan of our rigging, in my opinion—but I am ready to be contradicted by more experienced sailors—common sense would dictate regularly monitoring your rigging and replacing it as soon as any questionable signs appear.

Causes of Standing Rigging Wear

While metallic rigging might seem technically indestructible, this is not really the case. Indeed, a rigging cable—shroud, forestay, or backstay—will age over time. Although oxidation can affect metals over time, a standing rigging cable will mainly wear out due to the stresses it undergoes. Professionals call this wear “fatigue.” It is true that the rigging is, so to speak, always under stress, even at anchor. It is never under the same tension and therefore undergoes irregular stresses.

For example, take the boom vang catching the wind or an overtightened halyard. These will damage the mast over time by causing impacts, and consequently, the rigging. Let’s take another example: while sailing, you have all noticed the leeward shroud oscillating, especially when sailing upwind. This one will wear out faster than the windward shroud, which is under tension.

But in my opinion, in any case, the most fragile cable, the one that undergoes the most stress, is the forestay. Indeed, when the boat is equipped with a roller-furling genoa, the forestay will undergo twisting during the maneuvers of the headsail. It will be stressed with each furling and unfurling of the genoa. The forestay will therefore age much faster. That’s why I tend to replace it more often personally.

To slow down its wear, start by properly adjusting your rigging. Then, check it regularly. And that brings us to our final section.

How to Check Your Standing Rigging?

The rigging check should be done regularly, just like the sails, starting from the mast step to the shroud chainplates. The boat’s winterization is a good time to focus on the standing rigging and inspect it. Obviously, if the sailboat is unstepped, it will be easier. Otherwise, you will have to climb to the masthead at some point.

Check the Boat’s Mast

First, check for any signs of cracks and corrosion at the mast step. If the mast appears to have taken a hit, an expert’s eye becomes essential. At the same time, take the time to check the various fixings of the winches, jammers, and pop rivets. Finally, inspect the sheaves; cracks can appear in these areas.

Inspect the Shrouds

The cables must also be checked every year. The most important thing is to verify that no strands are broken. If the boat is unstepped, take the time to run your hand along the entire length of the cable. This way, you can feel if a strand is broken. But be careful with your hand… You can also use wool gloves. If a strand is damaged, the wool will catch on it.

At the same time, check the chainplates, turnbuckles, and their operation. Pay particular attention to the cable ends and their proper alignment; this is where problems can first appear. Finally, check the chainplate attachments inside the boat. This is also an opportunity to look for any water leaks.

Climb to the Masthead

Then, check the rigging as you climb, to inspect the turnbuckles, threads, and the condition of the split pins. Also look for any signs of cracks and corrosion on the spreaders.

Finally, once at the top, check the masthead and halyard sheaves (looking for cracks, ensuring they turn smoothly, and checking the halyards pass through properly…).
