The standing rigging of a boat consists of all the cables used to hold and adjust the sailboat’s mast. Understanding this rigging is important for boat maintenance and mast tuning, for example. Let’s explore these different cables and the terminology of the various parts of a boat’s standing rigging.

Definition of a Boat’s Standing Rigging

Let’s start with a definition of standing rigging. The standing rigging is part of the sailboat’s rigging system. Okay, that’s quite obvious. But unlike the running rigging, which is mobile, the standing rigging is fixed. Its role is to hold the mast and other spars in place. Beyond just holding the mast, the standing rigging also allows for adjusting the mast’s profile and rake.

But what are the specific features of standing rigging?

The standing rigging of modern boats bears little resemblance to the rigging of old sailing ships or classic sailboats. Apart from being simplified, it is also more rational.

While, several decades ago, rigging was made of textile, today’s standing rigging is made of steel. These cables are made up of several strands or, more rarely, a single strand. This is referred to as a single-strand cable.

Today, textile is making a big comeback. More and more racing and regatta sailboats are equipped with textile cables. Obviously, this textile has nothing to do with what was used before. Today, thanks to advanced fibers, these cables are stronger while being lighter.

But let’s look together at the different cables that make up the standing rigging, through this glossary.

  • Forestay: The forestay is a cable running from the top of the mast to the bow of the boat. It holds the mast in place. It is one of the most important cables for the proper support of the mast. It can attach at the top of the mast or lower down. This is referred to as a fractional or masthead rig.
  • Lower forestay: The lower forestay is a smaller cable than the main forestay. It runs from the middle of the mast down closer to it. It supports the lower part of the mast, mainly on sailboats with fractional rigging.
  • Removable forestay: This is a movable stay used to set up and rig a storm sail, such as a storm jib.
  • Backstay: This is a cable or metal rod that runs from the top of the mast to the stern of the boat, usually at a downward angle. The backstay helps stabilize the mast by exerting a backward force, which counterbalances the forward tension exerted by the forestay. By adjusting the tension of the backstay, you can adjust the mast’s bend (rake) and influence the shape of the sails.
  • Running backstays: There are two running backstays. These are movable cables mounted on a tackle. They allow the forestay to be tensioned by exerting a backward force on the mast. They are very useful when sailing upwind.
  • Shrouds: Shrouds are cables or metal rods that support the masts of a sailboat, ensuring their lateral stability. These elements are an integral part of a sailboat’s rigging and are essential for keeping the mast in a vertical position.
  • Cap shrouds: Cap shrouds are the longest shrouds. They run from the top of the mast.
  • Lower shrouds: Lower shrouds support the lower part of the mast, helping to maintain its vertical stability. Adjusting their tension is essential for influencing the mast’s bend and optimizing the sailboat’s performance.

Adjusting the Standing Rigging

Adjusting the cables of the standing rigging, such as shrouds, lower shrouds, backstays, and others, has several impacts on the boat:

  • Mast Stability: First, adjusting the tension of the cables helps keep the mast in a vertical position. This ensures the structural stability of the mast.
  • Mast Bend Control: Next, by adjusting the tension of the cables, you can influence the bend of the mast. This allows you to optimize the shape of the sails according to wind conditions. A well-bent mast can improve the sailboat’s performance.
  • Reducing Undesirable Movements: By adjusting the cables, especially the lower shrouds and backstays, you can minimize undesirable movements of the mast. This is particularly important when sailing upwind.
  • Load Balancing: Proper adjustment of the cables allows for even distribution of loads on the mast. This helps prevent uneven wear and extends the lifespan of the rigging components.
