What are the different parts of a boat’s rigging?

The rigging of a boat, along with its sails, is the engine of a sailboat, with the wind as its fuel. Without the mast, shrouds, or running rigging, it would be impossible to hoist the sails. But what are the different parts of a rig?

The rigging is much more complex than one might imagine. Simply hoisting the sails with a halyard along a mast held by cables does not cover everything about rigging. It is an essential element that defines a boat’s character, its maneuverability, and its ability to sail on the water, depending on the sea conditions and wind strength. Indeed, this rigging can take different forms and be adjusted differently depending on the sailboat.

Together, we will review all the parts of the rigging. Alongside the rigging lexicon, we will focus on three concepts. From spars to standing and running rigging elements, we will explore this boat engine as a whole.

Definition of Rigging

The rigging of a boat is the set of components and structures that support and control its sails. It transmits the wind’s force to the boat, ensuring propulsion and maneuverability.

It consists of two main parts:

  • Standing rigging, which includes fixed elements such as masts and shrouds,
  • Running rigging, consisting of movable elements such as sails, halyards, and sheets.

The rigging plays a crucial role in sailing by allowing the boat to move efficiently and respond to the sailor’s commands to steer the vessel. We will review its various concepts, focusing particularly on spars, standing rigging, and running rigging.

The Boat’s Spars

If I separate the spars of the sailboat from the standing rigging, it is purely for ease of explanation. Indeed, these spars, including the sailboat’s mast, are considered part of the standing rigging. This concept includes all the long, rigid parts of the boat. They allow the sails to be hoisted and extended. Originally, spars were made of wood. Today, they are made of aluminum, carbon, or even composite materials.

  • The boom: Adjusts the leech of the mainsail.
  • The bowsprit extends the tack point of the foresail.
  • The Malet’s tail moves the halyard point of the mizzen sail backward.

Standing Rigging

To hold these spars in place, we need cables. These cables hold the mast, among other things. But beyond keeping it upright, these cables also allow adjusting the mast. The adjustment of the standing rigging is very important for the proper balance of the sailboat. These cables can be made of steel or synthetic ropes, such as Dyneema or Vectran. These materials are lightweight, very strong, and do not oxidize. They are commonly used on high-performance sailboats.

  • The forestay holds the mast from the front.
  • The removable forestay, or running forestay
  • The lower forestay takes up the load in the middle of the mast.
  • The backstay holds the rigging from the rear.
  • The shrouds hold the mast laterally.
  • The lower shrouds are shrouds that reach approximately the middle of the mast.
  • The cap shrouds are shrouds returning to the base of the mast. They are used on catamarans.
  • Spreaders widen the angle of the shrouds.

Running Rigging

The running rigging of a sailboat refers to all the movable and adjustable elements that control the shape, orientation, and tension of a sailboat’s sails. Unlike the standing rigging, which includes fixed elements such as masts, shrouds, and stays, the running rigging consists of cables, halyards, pulleys, and other components that can be adjusted while sailing to trim the sails according to wind conditions and the sailor’s needs.

  • Halyards hoist the sails.
  • Sheets trim or ease the sails.
  • Topping lifts adjust the boom or spinnaker pole from above.
  • Downhauls adjust the boom or spinnaker pole from below.
  • Vang adjusts the mast from the rear.
  • The guy adjusts the spinnaker.
  • Reefing lines reduce the sail and take a reef.
  • The furling line of the genoa allows rolling or unrolling the foresail.
