Hanse 370, an elegant and versatile sailing yacht

The Hanse 370 is an 11.25-meter sailboat produced between 2006 and 2020. Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co., this German-built yacht successfully combines elegance, performance, and onboard comfort. Easy to handle, especially thanks to its self-tacking jib, it has won over sailors looking for a versatile sailboat capable of both fast cruising and extended family stays.

History of the Hanse 370

The Hanse 370 was launched in 2006 by the German shipyard Hanse Yachts, based in Greifswald. The naval architecture is signed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co., a renowned duo known for their high-performance and modern designs, who have long collaborated with the shipyard. This model was produced until 2020.

Designed to offer a faster and more contemporary alternative to classic cruising sailboats, the Hanse 370 was positioned against competitors such as the Bavaria 37 Cruiser, the Dufour 375 Grand Large, and the Beneteau Oceanis 37. Its program is primarily aimed at family cruising, but its hull qualities also make it perform well in friendly regattas.

The construction is made of glass-epoxy sandwich to provide robustness and lightness, with a hull molded by vacuum infusion—a process still rare at the time for production sailboats.

Interior Layout

Hanse 370 saloon

The Hanse 370 offers several interior layout options, mainly in two or three cabins. In the three-cabin version, two aft cabins flank a spacious cockpit, while the two-cabin version offers a large storage locker to starboard.

The saloon is bright, with large hull portholes and a highly glazed roof, enhancing the sense of space. The furniture is in light wood (oak or mahogany, depending on the finish), and the atmosphere is contemporary.

The L-shaped galley is functional, featuring a large worktop, a refrigerator, a double sink, and a gimballed stove. The chart table is well-sized for serious use.

The head is equipped with a separate shower, a rare advantage for a boat of this size. The overall layout offers a comfortable headroom (about 1.90 m), appreciated by taller individuals.

Sailing Qualities

Hanse 370

The Hanse 370 is often praised for its balance under sail and ease of handling, especially with a reduced crew. Thanks to its standard self-tacking jib and well-proportioned sail plan, it is easy to maneuver, even single-handed.

Its wide, soft-chine hull ensures good stiffness in the sail, allowing it to maintain a precise course upwind. The weight-to-sail area ratio gives it good acceleration in light winds, while its deep rudder provides excellent grip in strong gusts.

In terms of seakeeping, the Hanse 370 is comfortable both in coastal cruising and offshore passages. Its solid structure, combined with a modern hull, gives it excellent performance in rough seas. However, some owners note that the boat becomes more physical with the mainsail fully hoisted in winds over 20 knots.

Owners’ Reviews

Owner feedback is generally very positive:

  • Ease of handling: The self-tacking jib is unanimously appreciated for simplifying tacking.
  • Performance: The Hanse 370 is described as lively and enjoyable to steer, even in rough seas.
  • Interior comfort: Space and brightness onboard are often highlighted.
  • Durability: The infused construction inspires long-term confidence.

Some reservations are occasionally expressed regarding:

  • The weight of the mainsail: It can be difficult to hoist without an electric winch.
  • Original fittings: Some have replaced certain equipment to improve durability (winches, blocks).
  • Woodwork finish: Considered good but not overly luxurious, in line with the shipyard’s philosophy.

Overall, the Hanse 370 is seen as an excellent compromise between comfort, performance, and ease of use.
